Betty is a 3 years old female who weighs 5 pounds.
Meet our special friend Betty! This all black domestic shorthair is a 3 year old spayed female, and she is looking for a very special home to call her own. Betty is what the shelter calls a "Spirit Cat"... what exactly is that, you ask? Great question, we'd love to tell you! A spirit cat is a kitty that has had little socialization through their life, resulting in them being reserved and shyer around people than other cats would be. They need a person that is very patient, and willing to give them time, space, and lots of understanding (and treats!). There is a kind, comfortable, happy kitty in there- they just need the right environment and support to let that part of themselves shine!
In Betty's case, when you first walk up to her enclosure, those ears go as flat as can be (GREAT body language!) and she tends to try to make herself seem small. However, when you just sit there and talk softly to her, giving her slow, soft blinks, she begins to soften. Those ears slowly stop being pressed to her head, and she allows her body to loosen over time. After a few minutes of this gentle interaction, you're able to slowly present her a Churu (a wonderful push up treat!) and she enjoys lapping it up. She still watches you closely, but she allows herself to enjoy the treat and become more comfortable with you. After doing this routine for some days, you are even able to carefully present your hand for the sniff test. She gives you some sniffs, and looks at you, and you can give a gentle rub to her forehead.
Eventually, after doing this slow, respectful routine, we do expect Betty to come out of her shell even more. No, she may never become the cat that sits in your lap, or rubs on your face, or even follows you around the house rubbing on your legs. However, what Betty will be is a very grateful girl that perks up in your presence during meal times and bonding times. You will be the person that gave a second chance to a very reserved cat who will be so much happier in your home, and made a huge difference in her life.
When you take Betty home, we will send you with all of the supplies you'll need to set her up for success- a large dog crate to keep her in during the transition (we recommend she remains in the crate for about 2 weeks, and perhaps longer depending on how she is transitioning), blankets, toys (she LOVES toy mice & light toys she can toss around, as well as cat-nip pillows!), her favorite food, Churus, and staff will go over in depth the best ways to worm your way into Betty's heart.
One of the reasons Betty came to us is that she very much did not like a dog being introduced to the home. Due to this, we are not placing her with a dog. We are unsure how she would be with another cat in the home, so we are open to her going to a home with another cat as long as the adopter is able to introduce Betty to them very slowly. A kind, confident cat that can show her how to "cat" may actually be beneficial for her! Due to her fearful personality, we are not placing her with young children (teens+). Betty may be a bit of a project, but the reward of her gratitude and future affection will be so, so worthwhile. Are you ready to win over the heart of our good friend Betty? Follow the steps below to come meet her!
