My Story

How I Arrived At NHS: Stormy and Candy Cane were part of a litter of 5 kittens trapped last fall and brought to safety when they were about 3 months old. They all spent time with a loving individual who loved and cared for them while working on getting them better acquainted with humans until they could come to Northwoods. The shelter environment was pretty intimidating for this crew. Two of the siblings were adopted right away while the other four went into foster so they could get the individual focus they needed to continue to advance in their socialization. Note from foster mom: Both Stormy and CC have come a long way since I first took them in. Their comfort level at being around and interacting with a human is night and day different. Although neither is a fan of being picked up and held, they both enjoy being pet and especially the neck scritches and ear massages. Going into a new home will require a slow transition where they are kept in their own room/quiet space until they become comfortable in the new setting and with their new family. It can take time and patience when adopting an animal where this is needed but consistency in interactions will help these girls re-settle and once they are comfortable and the bond develops, you'll be rewarded with a great companion. Northwoods will be able to give you tips and guidance on how to do a slow transition if this is new to you. Candy Cane - or CC for short is the first of this trio to engage in interactive play. She is not afraid to put her feet onto your lap to get what she wants and has even climbed my back a few times. CC has blossomed like a flower since I first took her in and has gotten to the point of wanting pets vs trying to avoid them. CC enjoys pets all the way down her back and will stop what she's doing to enjoy it. She has even rolled onto her back for belly rubs which represents just how far her trust of humans has come. These girls love playing with a shoelace knotted at both ends, chasing a laser light, wand toys, and a tiered ball track spinner. They love being with each other and would do best, even thrive, if going to a home with another feline, or even getting to go home together. They LOVE the squeeze up treats - Churu and Delectables. Stormy, being her laid back self will sit patiently and wait for hers while Candy Cane will eagerly tell you she's ready for hers by putting her front paws onto your lap. They will eagerly lick bits of these treats off a finger. Shake a bag of dry treats and they all perk up - knowing I will pitch a few treats into their pen and they have to find them. Good With Kids: not younger children due to activity level Good With Cats: yes but we recommend a slow introduction Good With Dogs: yes but we recommend a slow introduction Cats are feline leukemia/feline immunodeficiency virus tested (if applicable). They have had at least their first distemper combo (booster given if been in our care for the appropriate time), been de-wormed, microchipped, and treated with a flea and tick product (if applicable). All the cats are spayed or neutered before they leave for their forever homes.
