My Story

Dexter, a Golden Retriever / Standard Poodle mix, is a handsome, sweet young adult dog who had a bit of a detour early in his life. He was born on July 3, 2022, and was is a very loving home for the first several months. His perimeter collar was accidentally not reset and he was loose in the neighborhood. He came to us through our Good Samaritan program when he was found on a back road with a badly wounded leg. He had been shot in the left shoulder and the damage was so great that his left front leg had to be amputated. As dogs often do, he recovered very well from his surgery and has been in a terrific foster home ever since. He is a delightful dog and currently weighs 54 pounds. That is a good weight for him and his family will need to be vigilant about keeping him at that weight so he doesn't have extra weight on his joints as he gets older. Dexter is playful and active. He gets along wonderfully with the other dogs and puppies and cats in his foster home. He loves hikes in the woods and swimming is his favorite exercise. He loves children and enjoys spending time with his people. If you are ready for the love and also the work, time, patience, expense and commitment required to care for a dog for its entire life, we welcome your adoption application! Sending us a completed application at www.ForThePets.org is the very first step so be sure to do that first thing! The adoption donation is $200. The adoption donation also includes a discount for our Canine Good Citizen Class. When applying for any adoption, please be aware that The Humane Society office is open Mon - Thurs from 10 - 3. We will respond to any inquiries or adoption submissions sent during non-office hours on the next day we are in the office. Thank you for your understanding! Dog Adoption Guidelines: You must fill out an application to be considered for adoption. Send your application in directly at www.ForThePets.org. You can email us with any questions at [email protected]. It is not a first come process; we try to match the dog with the family for a FOREVER home. We process all applications at once and take the dog off the site, place on adoption pending status until a decision is made. If a suitable home match is not found, the dog returns to active status. The dog adoption process can take up to two weeks; we are a small group of volunteers who mostly have full time jobs. All of our dogs are indoor dogs with outdoor privileges, unless otherwise specified. We do not fly or ship our dogs due to heat/cold concerns and safety issues. If you are willing to fly out AND fly the dog back in the cabin (size restrictions) with you, that would be considered. If you apply to adopt a dog and are chosen, you must come to Murray, KY to pick up the dog and fill out the paperwork in person. We do adopt out-of-state, but we do not transport. We can't provide individual meet and greet sessions for each applicant. If chosen to adopt, you will have plenty of time for your family and pets to visit with the potential new family member before signing any paperwork and will not be committed to adopt if you choose not to at that time.
