Nutmeg has been suffering from severe neglect. She was brought to an emergency vet after she had collapsed. Weak and extremely emaciated, her body is covered in painful open wounds. The former owners opted for euthanasia and surrendered Nutmeg to the vet, where Animal Haven was called to step in to help save this poor girl.
At a shocking 22lbs, less than half the expected weight of a Goldendoodle with her frame, Nutmeg required immediate intensive care. They cleaned out her many wounds, which they suspected were from urine scalding and bone contact with the ground from malnutrition.
We are heartbroken for this poor girl, who, despite her condition, has a gentle demeanor and craves attention. We do not know how long she has been in this condition but it certainly did not happen overnight. We were told that the former owners claimed to have found her wandering as a stray in a "worse state" 2-3 months ago, but the story has changed a few times, and it's a little bit hard to believe given her current condition. Please understand that we are going off of what vets have seen and what we've been told.

Nutmeg was discharged from the vet last week and we're happy to report she has been making a slow, but steady recovery at Animal Haven.
She has been on a strict and regulated feeding schedule to avoid potential complications, but we are SO thrilled that Nutmeg has gained a few pounds!
Her care has proven to be a little more complicated than originally expected due to the location of her largest and most concerning wound. Right below her tail is a large, open wound that was the result of her hip bones rubbing against a hard surface through her skin while she sat. The nature of it is quite graphic and we don't feel comfortable sharing them here. Because of the severity of the wound and awkward location, she required a specialized bandage that could only be put on by a vet. Heartbreakingly, Nutmeg wags her tail so much around the humans caring for her that she often displaces the bandage and has made frequent trips for bandage changes.
Nutmeg was brought back to our partner emergency vet yesterday to reassess her condition and wound progression. The good news is that the skin in the area had healed enough in the short time at Animal Haven that her surgeon was able to close the wound!
She is still left with wounds on her legs that require weekly bandage changes. But thankfully, these should heal over time on their own without surgical intervention.
We have received an outpour of interest about Nutmeg and we are looking for a special person to take on her care. We are hoping to find a potential adopter - beyond a temporary foster - for this precious girl. Animal Haven's dedicated team will be here for support and guidance for anyone willing and interested in adopting Nutmeg. She deserves to heal and recover in a loving home, and we know one is out there. We are open to a foster-to-adopt situation and know there will be a lot of questions. Please submit an inquiry for more information.
Nutmeg would not have had a chance without our amazing supporters and we cannot thank everyone who has contributed to her care enough.
